Actor-music composer Vijay Antony’s latest film, Toofan, was released in cinemas today. Toofan is the Telugu-dubbed version of the recently released Tamil action drama, Mazhai Pidikatha Manithan. The film also features popular Tamil actors Sathyaraj, R Sarathkumar, and Megha Akas and Kannada actor Daali Dhananjaya in lead roles. Here’s our review of the movie.
Story:
Saleem (Vijay Antony) is a secret agent. He loses the girl he loves during a mission. This tragedy changes Saleem’s life entirely. Saleem’s Chief (Sarathkumar) relocates him to a secret place. A notorious money lender named Daali (Daali Dhanunjaya) loots the residents of that town by charging high interest rates. Daali even kills those who confront his thirst for blood money. What does Saleem do to save the town from Daali’s clutches? What is the role of Sowmya (Megha Akash) in the story? Also, what does the Captain (Sathyaraj) order Saleem? How does Saleem’s story end? The answers to these questions form the main crux of the story.
Plus Points:
Vijay Antony gives a powerful performance as Agent Saleem. The actor-composer impresses with his performance in action sequences as well as emotional scenes by effortlessly showcasing variations. Megha Akash does well in heavy-duty emotional scenes. Veteran stars Sarathkumar and Sathyaraj add depth to the narrative with their presence and performance.
Compared to his previous movies, Daali Dhananjaya comes up with a striking performance in Toofan. Other crucial actors, such as Murali Sharma and Pruthvi Ambaar, do justice to their characters. Writer-director Vijay Milton superbly pens some emotional scenes and the climax episodes. The way he drops the lead for the film’s sequel is quite impressive.
Minus Points:
The narrative loses momentum in certain scenes. Also, the crucial conflict point in the story is not quite engaging. The writer-director couldn’t connect Vijay Antony’s character with other key characters in the story, resulting in an underwhelming movie. Adding to this, the graph designed for Vijay Antony’s character drops occasionally.
Even though director Vijay Milton raises expectations by handling the first half decently with an impressive concept, action sequences, and a solid interval episode, the snail-paced narration, routine drama, and unnecessary scenes lacking logic resulted in a lackluster film on the whole. Vijay Antony’s character should have been designed more effectively by adding more conflict to it.
Technical Aspects:
Writer-director Vijay Milton comfortably handles some action sequences and emotional scenes. However, the story and screenplay penned by him fail to engage viewers. Coming to the music, both the background score and the songs succeed in holding the narrative and audience’s attention. Vijay Milton raises the film’s visual appeal with his splendid cinematography. The editor should have trimmed out certain slow-paced and unnecessary scenes. Producers Kamal Bohra, D Lalithaa, B Pradeep, and Pankaj Bohra infused rich production values by not compromising on the budget.
Verdict:
Toofan is an emotional action drama in which only a few emotions and action sequences impress the audience. The lethargic screenplay and the lack of interesting elements in the second half and the routine narrative bring down the film’s overall impact. Toofan scores well with its well-designed action sequences. However, keep your expectations in check while watching this action drama this weekend.
