Spark, starring Vikrant, Mehreen Pirzada, and Rukshar Dhillon, is now out in theatres. The film’s story and screenplay were penned by the hero Vikrant himself. Let’s see how the film is.
Lekha (Mehreen Pirzada) has mighty expectations about her life partner, and she rejects every other guy whom her father asks to marry. She falls for Arya (Vikrant) instantly. This is also the time a series of suicides happen in the city. Before committing suicide, those people kill a few others, too. Lekha’s parents suspect that Arya is behind the suicide killings. Who exactly is behind the mysterious deaths? What is the killer’s motive? What is that he/she is trying to gain through the crime? This is what Spark is about.
The makers have spent a bomb on the film, and the same is visible in each and every frame. Despite the hero being a debutant, the team went all out and made the film without any compromises. The grand visuals, solid production design, and the way the songs are shot are very pleasant to the eye.
Debutant Vikrant did a decent job as an actor, and he has charming looks. Mehreen and Rukshar Dhillon looked good, and they performed well according to their respective roles. The funny antics of Vennela Kishore and Satya offer some respite here and there. Guru Somasundaram gave a good performance, but his dubbing could have been better. Compared to the first half, the latter hour had some decent scenes.
The basic issue with Spark is that it tries to tick many boxes, and in this attempt, it ends up being a hotchpotch of many genres. In simple terms, Spark is an over-ambitious project that tries to cover all the elements like suspense, romance, comedy, and action, but the narrative is disjointed.
The core point of Spark has the potential to turn out to be a solid crime thriller, but as mentioned above, the makers concentrated on multiple elements that worked against the film big time. At times, Spark also reminds us of films like 7th Sense and Thani Oruvan.
If the bad writing wasn’t enough, the lengthy runtime is one more main drawback. At a runtime of nearly 3 hours, Spark tests the patience levels of the audience. Just when one thinks the movie will end, multiple subplots are introduced with some twists. But one can easily see them coming from miles away.
Hesham Abdul Wahab gave very good songs, and the background score is decent. A R Ashok Kumar’s visuals are easy on the eye. The editing team did a poor job, as the movie was prolonged for more than 20 minutes. Hence, a few good scenes, too, don’t click. The production values are exquisite.
Spark’s story isn’t new, but the movie could have been a good commercial entertainer had the execution been good. The inexperience was visible in many scenes as the proceedings lacked a proper flow. The second half had some decent moments, but they are few and far between.
On the whole, Spark had the opportunity to become a good thriller, but the narration didn’t let that happen. Lead actors Vikrant, Mehreen Pirzada, and Rukshar Dhillon are fine in their roles, and the second half has some decent moments here and there. But the movie is dragged on for no reason for about 3 hours, and it is difficult to sit through such a lengthy runtime. Hence, the end result is far from being satisfactory.
