Naveen Chandra and Sunainaa starrer Tamil web series, Inspector Rishi, has been released on Amazon Prime Video today in all major Indian languages, including Telugu. Read our review to find out how the series is.
Story:
Rishi Nandhan (Naveen Chandra), a one-eyed crime branch inspector, arrives in Thaenkaadu village near Coimbatore, surrounded by dense forest land, to investigate a series of strange murders that have occurred in the area. Accompanied by his sub-inspectors, Ayyanar (Kanna Ravi) and Chitra (Malini Jeevarathnam), he embarks on a mission to uncover whether the murders are indeed the work of Vanaratchi, the goddess who protects the forest, or not. The series delves into the mystery surrounding the murders, revealing the motives behind them and the methods by which they are carried out.
Plus Points:
Naveen Chandra once again shines in his role, skillfully portraying the nuanced character of a determined inspector investigating a series of forest murders.
Sunainaa delivers another noteworthy performance as a Forest Beat Officer, displaying innocence and depth in her character portrayal.
Supporting actors Malini Jeevarathnam, Kanna Ravi, Srikrishna Dayal, and Kumaravel also deliver fine performances, enhancing the series’ overall quality.
Minus Points:
The series is unable to successfully combine mystery, horror, and thriller elements, leading to a badly developed storyline and a sluggish screenplay.
The pacing of the first five episodes tests the audience’s patience, with a lack of quickness in storytelling. Despite some improvement in later episodes, the climax remains sluggish. Also, watching 10 episodes with a total runtime of 8 hours is challenging for viewers.
The horror elements fail to evoke genuine fear, and the sporadic appearances of Vanaratchi lack impact due to ineffective narration and camera moves.
The inconsistency in language use, with Tamil songs in a Telugu-dubbed version, detracts from the viewing experience for the regional audience.
The series is burdened by many characters who contribute minimally to the storyline, resulting in a disjointed narrative and limited opportunities for character development. Additionally, the creator’s decision to allocate excessive space to subplots hinders the overall flow of the series.
Technical Aspects:
Director JS Nandhini’s attempt to deliver a compelling story is hindered by unnecessary scenes and a stretched-out narrative, resulting in a lack of engagement.
The sound design and cinematography fail to create a suspenseful atmosphere, while the subpar editing leaves room for improvement.
On the positive side, K Kadhirr’s production design is praiseworthy, adding depth to the series’ visual appeal.
Verdict:
On the whole, Inspector Rishi falls short of expectations due to its weak storyline, slow pacing, and technical shortcomings. While the lead pair’s performances are admirable, the series fails to deliver a captivating viewing experience, primarily due to unnecessary scenes, excessive episodes, and unwarranted subplots. Investing time in a series that fails to live up to its potential is not advisable.
